This is a fascinating book about a rather obscure unless you are an Icelander piece of 17th century history a slave raid on Iceland in 1627 and its aftermath for one captive a Pastor in his 60s the Rev Olafur Egilsson of the titleThe core of the book is the translation of his account of his travels For me the most interesting parts were his travails by land and sea to reach home after he was released to seek ransom for his fellow slaves He did not necessarily understand everything he saw and was confused by distances but it allows one to see the 17th century through the eyes of a contemporary rather than by our standards And one who believed his God was closeHowever this book is rather than just a translation There is additional material from the period to give background to the places and events mentioned For me even useful were the plentiful but not obtrusive notes and appendices explaining and amplifying the text As instances fascinating discussions on the many and various currencies in use over Europe and N Africa at the time and how they were converted the Rev Egilsson appeared good at this and on the units of length in use where the Rev seemed rather less competentHighly recommended certainly if you are interested in this period but even if not has a lot to offer
